Follow Yoga Instructions Carefully to Avoid Injury

Yoga is a wonderful exercise choice to reduce stress and improve flexibility. Through yoga instruction, you will bring together your mind, body and spirit for overall health and well-being. Yoga releases tension and encourages proper relaxation and meditation techniques. However, if you do not follow yoga instructions carefully to ensure proper positioning and balance, yoga can unfortunately also lead to pain.

Yoga may not strike you as the type of exercise that is vigorous enough to hurt you, but those gentle stretches can make muscles sore if you attempt yoga without the proper training on form. First and foremost, you need to listen to your body, since it will let you know when it is getting pushed to the limit. If you begin to feel pain, or you are not able to breathe as deeply during a position, relax your position or come out of it entirely. Yoga should begin slowly and carefully, with a gradual build of positions and stretches to keep your workout challenging and fun.

Yoga Instruction for the Beginner

If you are new to yoga, the best place to start is in a formal yoga class. If you are mostly interested in the physical benefits of yoga, instruction at your local gym or workout center will be sufficient. A yoga instructor here can watch your positioning, and correct you if you need refining. He can also help you know how to push your stretches further without hurting yourself. If you have a desire to learn more about the spiritual aspects, a yoga center would be a good choice. Once you have some formal yoga instruction under your belt, feel free to try some workouts in the comfort of your own living room.

Help for the Home Workout

If you decide to move your yoga sessions to your home, there are some tools you can use to ensure that your yoga instruction will continue. First, you can ask your yoga instructor to write down a few of the poses for you, or even a sequence that you can work on. There are also posters you can buy that include pictures and instructions of the various yoga poses. If you don't want to cover the wall of your bedroom with a large poster, you can use yoga cards instead. The cards can be mixed up for variety, or you can use the suggested sequences that come with the decks. Finally, there are many good yoga instruction books on the market. These books will give you information on the proper form for the various poses, as well as ways to incorporate the principles of yoga into other aspects of your life.

Yoga is a popular and beneficial way of keeping your body and your mind in good health. Proper yoga instruction will ensure that you maximize the benefits of your workouts while minimizing the potential for injury.

Basic Principles Associated with Yoga for Beginners

Yoga for beginners begins with basic information regarding the discipline of yoga. Yoga is a discipline in which the goal is to attain oneness with the universe or Supreme Being through breathing. This one breath principle practices a one breath concept that unionizes the individual with those around, the universe and the Supreme Creator.

The word yoga literally means union. Practicing yoga focuses on a freeing of the spirit and mind of the individual in order to enhance the practice of union with God through the one breathe. Instruction of yoga for beginners also incorporates a series of physical movements. These movements are practiced so that the body is cleansed and strengthened for extended times devoted for meditation.

Benefits

Yoga for beginners offers many benefits to the new devotee. In addition to being a discipline that will bring mobility and strength to the human body, there are some deeper physical, mental and spiritual benefits. Some of those benefits include sharpening the mind, becoming more attuned to various bodily systems functioning within the body, anti-aging of the blood vessels and an increase in the range of motion.

Selection of Yoga Style

Yoga for beginners starts with a hard decision. That decision requires a choice as to what style of yoga to practice. There are eight basic styles of yoga to consider. Specifically those styles include Bhakti, Karma, Jnana, Raja, Mantra, Laya, Hatha and Tantra Yoga.

With so many choices, it is clear that yoga for beginners can be a bit on the confusing side. To dispel this confusion it is best for the beginner to investigate each of the various forms of yoga and choose for themselves what the best style of yoga to practice is. The various styles of yoga have the same goal of oneness, however each has a variation. This variation should be matched with the beginner's comfort level. For example, Hatha yoga is the most basic of style and may be the starting practice point of yoga for beginners.

Basic Poses

There are many basic poses associated with yoga for beginners. Three of those basic poses include the sun salutation, the shoulder stand and the corpse pose.

The sun salutation is a yoga routine that combines various yoga postures, practice of breathing, sunbathing and petition. These 12 positions are coordinated in motion and incorporate the proper rhythms of breathing.

The shoulder stand is also a basic routine with yoga for beginners. With this pose it is important not to allow the look of the pose to frighten you and prevent your mastering of the critical cornerstone to practicing yoga.

The third pose is the corpse pose and is an unwinding pose. This particular pose is generally done at some point during your routine and as the last pose of your yoga routine. As the name implies, simply lie on your back and simulate a dead body. It is a method of simply relaxing every part of your body and is generally done for a 15 minute time period.

Why is Yoga good for Children?

Many adults who have entered into the world of yoga have realized the benefits of a regular yoga workout. Yoga brings the mind, body and spirit together for maximum health and overall well-being. So why not bring the benefits to our children through teaching yoga techniques to a younger generation? The advantages that adults reap from yoga can bring the same when we teach yoga to our children. Kids can learn body awareness, self-control and coordination - and that is just the beginning!

Yoga teaches kids to manage stress and get a handle on anger. Regular yoga workouts can even result in better health and a stronger immune system for your child. If your child has a difficulty such as ADD, yoga can improve your child's focus and ability to sit still. Yoga can be a fun way to fitness, especially when it encompasses good nutrition in addition to the exercises.

Teaching Yoga to Children

Since kids are naturally flexible, yoga is not a hard discipline for them to learn. They naturally love to hang upside down and see the world from a different angle. Balance is something they never seem to tire of trying to achieve. Yoga poses come easily to most kids. There is yoga classes specifically geared towards children, or you can even incorporate your child into your yoga program at home. As you work through the poses with your child, encourage your child to go beyond the exercise and imagine himself as a snake or turtle.

Help him to concentrate on his breathing and visualization as he works to ensure that he is reaping the maximum benefits of mental well-being as well as physical health. If you need additional help in learning how to modify a yoga program for children, there is a multitude of choices available in the form of videos and books. There is even material available for yoga with young children and babies.

Since yoga encompasses many aspects of health, you can incorporate many parts into your yoga program. Deep breathing techniques and meditation can teach your child self-control of his emotions and effective stress management. Good nutrition is an obvious key to good physical health, and can enhance the mental health and "thinking power" of your child as well.

The flexibility that is learned in yoga will aid your child with coordination and balance that will improve performance in many of the activities your child chooses to participate in. Yoga is a great program to begin with children. Give your child the benefits of yoga, and watch the positive results.
